Tuna Fishing – San Diego , CA – 2006

I go on this trip every year down in San Diego. It’s hosted by PRIMEDIA Source Interlink Media for companies that advertise in Primedia’s Off Road/Truck Group Magazines. Representatives and owners from RCD, Deaver Spring, Full Traction, 4WD products, Rubicon Express, and 316 design were on the boat along with Primedia staff for a fun day of fishing. We all met at the dock around 5 for some food, few beers, and some catching up. We boarded the Gallilean and left the dock at about 9 p.m. Water was glass the entire trip. Couldn’t ask for better weather or conditions.

Woke up at grey light to meter marks under the boat, but we couldn’t get anything to bite. Out the jigs go and time to look for a kelp patty.

15 minutes later we have our first stop on a paddy. First bait hits the water and it’s on! Dodo’s and mid grade YT’s everywhere. After getting tangled with my buddy Yusef from Brand H Promo and broke off. I re-tied and caught my first local dodo. Put that one on deck and as I’m walking by the skipper, he yells to everyone; “Fish the heavy line!” Hey! Ya don’t need to tell me twice. Out with the 60lb and I’m on again instantly. I boated a couple more Mahi. Anything that hit the water was instant bendo. Came back around to hit the kelp again. Another hookup for a nicer grade YT then the patty shut down. This was looking like it was going to be a great day on the pond!

We move down the line and another 10 minutes goes by. As soon as the chum hits the water, dodo’s explode. They were everywhere. You look down and they were just waiting for something to hit the water. We stayed there until it shut off.

We proceeded to jump another 5-6 patties. I think everyone on the boat at least caught 1 dodo or yellow. Where as some of the more experienced guys really stocked the freezers. We could not have asked for a better group of guys to fish with. The inexperienced guys were eager to learn and the experienced guys/gals were happy to help. It’s pretty cool to give a “first timer” a couple pointers and watch em go bendo!

It was a beautiful day… Deep blue clean water, Whales, Dolphins and flying fish were everywhere.

On our way in at about 6 miles off the point, we came across a Kelp paddy and the dodo’s were flying out of the water everywhere…

Check out the pics from this trip and several from years past.

That was a cool trip. If this blog would let me upload pictures, I would add some.
