Well, really you can fish for Bass all year. Ya know they do have eat too…
It’s still winter here but I just can’t wait any longer… Plus I need something to break up my zero catch Steelhead trips. So, last week I ventured out to Folsom Lake to see if I could stir up some Bass. Well the fishing was pretty good,.. catching on the other hand was poor. Unfortunately when fishing from shore you just cant cover as much water as you can from a boat and when you arrive at your part of the lake you plan to fish, and the wind is blowing, you cant just pull up the trolling motor and move. But, I’ve also noticed that when fishing from shore, it’s impossible to drive over fish moving to another spot.
I arrived at Browns Ravine boat launch, parked, grabbed two rods, my backpack and headed off just north the launch. I fished Spinner Baits, Jerk/Rip Baits, did a little Crankn’, Worms, and a couple Jigs. But to be honest, I just did not have the patience to put in the time on the Worms/Jigs and I really wanted to cover a lot of water to see it I could even locate some fish. I spent 90% of the afternoon throwing Spinner Baits.
It’s pretty cool fishing the lake from shore when it’s this low,.. (Keep in mind, I only moved up here to NorCal last Feb. and prior to moving up here, have not fished any NorCal water.) I realized this part of lake does not have any cover or much structure to speak of besides the bottom and water surface. I did find a few rocky points that looked like they went out a bit, but when I looked at the exposed shoreline above the water level, just plain old shoreline with a few rocky sections but not really any nice large area rock piles, drops, etc. and NO trees. The few trees I did see have ALL been cut of at the stump, why? Oh, I also found a couple small piles of what looked like small trees tied together with a cable. Hmmm… I’ve seen these same trees over on the Granite Bay side as well… an effort at adding some structure? Cool!
I moved along pretty fast, and only spent time at a few key spots along the way that I thought might produce some fish… But to no avail.
I live pretty close to Folsom and I will be fishing it alot. Check back often for more reports or better yet subscribe to either the Enews & Updates or if your like me, the RSS feed at the upright above the header.
As always, see ya on the water… and remember, the only way you’ll ever catch any fish is to get out from behind the computer screen, get off the couch, turn off the TV and GO FISH!
Here’s a shot I took back in Dec. You can see the red line that I added marking the current water level. The water level is rising. Click on the picture for a larger version. BTW – Per Folsom Lake Marina – Hobie Cove Ramp at Brown’s Ravine is now open. Use caution while boating — 5 mph on the entire lake.
