I worked as a deck-hand on several sport-fishing boats out of San Diego during the early to mid-90’s off & on for 6-7yrs and did a few seasons on a couple Long Rangers as well. I went to Alaska and fished a season on a Salmon Seiner working the deck and running a skiff. My plan was to work my way up into Alaska working various Commercial fisheries. Eventually ending up in Bristol Bay for Sockeye, then back down to Dutch Harbor for Crab. Well, I just had to go back to San Diego to see my girlfriend, Rochelle first. (Now my wife), I never made it back to Alaska. Then while back in SD, I worked another season or two on the Long Rangers. (those years seem to have all ran together) I Had plenty of hours to get my ticket (Capt. Lic.) and was looking to be an owner/operator some day. A lot of the guys that I worked with are now Capt.’s and/or owner/operators. I have since even had the privilege to go fish with one of them. But, that life just didn’t happen for me, long story. (new wife, family, etc.) No regret though, just great memories…
I plan on writing a few posts later telling some of those stories. I hope you enjoy them. But really they will be for my children when they get older so they might know a little about my fishing past… My Fishing Memoirs, it may not be no Zane Grey,.. But they are mine and some of the best years of my past.
Below are just a couple shots from 1996. I believe it was the last year I worked as a Deck-Hand on a Long Rang Sport-fishing boats out of San Diego. The last one is from my trip to Alaska.
