My buddy Russ from Hog-On Guide service gave me a call and said he has been getting a few shad in the evenings and wanted to know if I’d like to take my kids out. Sure! But we decided it would be best to take them one at a time. So Zack, my youngest son (41/2) and I met Russ around 5:30PM down at the American River and headed out. We did not have to go far from where we launched and Zack was entertained by all the people on the river that day rafting down… We got anchored up and began fishing. This method of Shad fishing is pretty simple and once your hooked up those things can pull! Great for kids too! Thanks to some great coaching from Russ, we are able to quickly get hooked up. Zack ended up catching eight fish in a couple of hours and few times they had him pinned to the side of the boat. After a while Zack said he was ready to go home. When fishing with young kids, I think it’s important to make it as an enjoyable experience as possible and when they are ready to go, if at all possible, you go. Even if your not ready to call it quits. Sometimes when I take the boys fishing with me from shore, I’ll bring along a few small toys (monster trucks) so they have something to play with once they are done fishing. The pictures below tell a better story. Enjoy… Check back for parts 2 and 3 or just go to the home page and Subscribe to eNews & Updates.
Oh! If your looking for a great guide to go out and get some Shad, give Russ a call over at Hog-On Guide service. Russ is great with kids too!
