Folsom Lake Bass Fishing – Where are they and what are they eating?

I probably fish Folsom Lake at least 2-3 times a week, 2 of those trips will usually be from shore. I’ll just say, fishing has been pretty tough lately. I have also been fishing our Bass club tournaments. With both of these in mind, I try to approach each trip with the intention of figuring out the puzzle of where the Bass are and what they are eating in hopes of figuring out a pattern. This can make or break your success at a Bass tournament so I really want to get better at it, rather than just going out every time and fishing the same baits, same techniques, with hit or miss success. In order to have any real success learning how to do this, you have to spend a lot of time on the water fishing.
The other day I fished the South Fork of Folsom Lake and came across a really cool cove. As with many of the coves & cuts on Folsom currently it was just loaded with debris, trees, etc. Bass Land!… At least it should be… I fished frogs, other topwater, plastics, senkos, etc. I finally ended up getting one on a white fluke. Real nice chunky & healthy Large Mouth. But that did not work the remainder of the day so I certainly could not consider that a pattern.
I went out on Folsom again last night with John from our Bass Club and together we probably fished 8-10 different baits/techniques for about 3.5 hours, (6-9:30PM). Should be prime time! Not even a single bite.
I’m determined to figure out and learn Folsom Lake as well as I can. The knowledge I gain along the way should help me learn how to establish a pattern on any body of water.
