Summer Frog Fishing

Summer and Fall can be an awesome time for top water and especially Frogs! I’ve always loved fishing top water and I don’t think there is anything  more exciting while fishing than when you see a fish explode on your bait. I’ve had some violent blow ups when Striped Bass fishing but that’s a whole other story.

I have not posetd much in the way of fishing lately because I’ve been really busy at work the last couple of weeks putting together a Magazine for a new client, Bass Anglers Guide and have not had any time to fish. We are now done with the mag and it at the prinetrs! So the other day on the way home I decided I would stop by a couple ponds and check them out.

The first pond I spent most of my time at working my way around the whole thing. I was almost back to where I started and hooked one 14″er on a frog that came unbuttoned about 6 feet from shore and then proceeded to beeline it full-speed right at my feet! He came out of the water and flopped around at my feet. I almost grabbed him, but before I could get a good hold of him he was gone. Oh well, it was just about time to head home anyways so I decided I would leave and stop at another pond I’ve been eye balling since moving up here last year.

To my surprise, when I arrived I discovered there was not just one pond, but 4 total! I did not have much time so I skipped the first one which actually looked the best but did not look to have easy access. The other two were 98% covered with weed growth and I’ll come back to fish those later when I have more time. (probably today ;-) ) I spotted the last one which looked to have easy access. So I grabbed two rods, one rigged with a buzz-bait and the other with a frog. In less than about 20min, at the end a long cast with the frog, along a row of tully’s and a couple boulders, I was rewarded with the nice healthy 3.5lber you see below. He blow up on my Kurmet the frog as soon as it hit the water. I love it when that happens!

I grew up fishing ponds and small bodies of water and it just goes to show, you still don’t have to fish big water to catch nice fish!

EDIT: Three days later I went back to spend a bit more time exploring the other ponds. I must have caught over 20 fish in a couple hours,… no more than 8″s though! Until I got over to the same spot I caught the fish above,.. I believe I caught the same fish! See below. Nice!

  1. Hey, If you like fishing top water so much, you should try using a jitter bug. I have amazing success with them. They make alot of commotion and really attract those bass.

Jitter Bug? You mean that cell phone for old folks? LOL! Seriously though, I haven’t seen one of those since I was a kid! Thanks for the memories though!
